Monday, May 30th, 2005[Entry 333]i gotta have some of your attention...
give it to me...Now that the long weekend is over...I need some time off! My mom, dad, and I were working machines this weekend. I'll spare long details, but give a short list... Friday I can't recall what was done at the condo, though I do know I went out to Novi with my mom. Saturday I'm not so sure what we did at the condo...I'm sure my dad was patching. We went and bought all my flooring on Saturday morning at Lowe's. I'm doing to do all laminate flooring in "Shenandoah Oak." It'll be nice. I also got the deal of the weekend at Home Depot on a front loading stackable washer. I ended up going back and buying the matching dryer today. Well, I sent my dad...but still. Yesterday and today we painted four of the five closets. I also got my microwave and some of my lighting fixtures. We primed the ceiling in the bathroom and kitchen/dining. My dad also intalled a new circuit box. Oh yeah, and we took out the carpeting in the living room and hall.
The linen closet and bathroom closet was lined with contact paper that I venture to say were from when the place was built. The contact paper was floral but green and orange flowers. Yummy city. What was even yummier was the SMELL of the contact paper. I can't even being to describe the smell. I burned a candle for a couple of hours in the hall closet and it took me about 30 minutes to get that smell out of my brain. Gross with a capital "G."
Oh...boy...when I bought my washer at H.D....that was a fiasco in itself. I was literally in the store for an hour just waiting for them to get my washer out of the back room. The guy helping me... yeah I went to high school with him. Totally weird. I don't think I ever talked to him and I don't think I ever had a class with him. If you asked me what his last name was, I'd say, "Um, I dunno." I hate that, though...[running into people from high school].
Last night was awesome...I decided to do laundry at 9:30 at night. First I washed my darks...and then I decided, "Man, I should wash my new sheets and put them on my bed!" This was at 10:00 at night after painting and shit. And then as my sheets were drying, I decided to do my lights. I was so damn tired...but there I was at 11:30 taking dirty sheets off my bed and putting on new ones. The new ones look cool, by the way...I think I mentioned them before...they're a really cool grass green color.
Really busy weekend...but I so wish it was longer! We're finally getting down to the nitty gritty and we gotta stop. We're so close to painting the walls the actual colors I picked out. I can't wait to see what the place looks like with the radass colors I have chosen ("Sour Lime" for the kitchen and dining room, some sort of light brown for the living room, and something-violet for the bathroom).
This weekend I started reading one of these old Detroit books I've had for a long time. For some reason, I never read it. Gen and Aaron rode their bikes to Elmwood Cemetary last weekend...so I picked up my Elmwood book to read and realized I have sort of ignored a lot of the "old" history of Detroit (pre-1900 sort of stuff). So I picked up All Our Yesterdays (which is THE coolest name for a Detroit book ever since it closely resembles the title of a very awesome song by a very awesome band)...and really haven't been able to put it down. Any time I had this weekend, I've been reading this book. The thing that irks me, though, is the constant "like many buildings in Detroit's history, such and such building is now a parking lot." THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN IN 1969! 19-fucking-69 and an author had to COMMENT on the fact that all the way back in 1969 Detroit did not appreciate its history. It makes me sick to my stomach to think that this struggle with the city preserving amazing, historical buildings has been going on for over 40 years. It's a "duh" that older buildings were knocked down for new buildings...but when someone makes it a point, back in 1969, to express their disgust in the amount of demolished properties for parking lots...it's just wrong.
I was going to go on a Naked Eye rant today...but perhaps I'll save it for some other day.
